| Users who pirated their copies of Windows XP may find that Service Pack 1 has more in store for them than just a fix or two hundred. Installations that were "cracked" by popular pirating tools will be invalidated by SP1, and will need to be immediately re-activated to work again. This, of course, assumes that there won't be simply another crack available to prevent this from happening soon after SP1 arrives. It will be interesting to see how many users get caught by this, valid or invalid they may be. Additionally, product activations that occur after SP1 is installed (both OEM and upgraders) will now send the product key along with the the installation ID key, allowing Microsoft to check for and control leaked keys rather easily. It may also allow Microsoft to scan valid key lists to look for spoofed keys, if such a thing exists. http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basi...ndowsxpsp1.asp The good news is that Microsoft has removed the utterly irritating immediate reactivation requirement for significant hardware changes, adjusting the requirement to a big phat 3 day buffer. So now when you swap out half your hardware, you'll get 3 days to re-activate before having to phone Microsoft. I've had to phone them a few times already, and the process is pretty painless. My only complaint is that the system is designed to be incredibly slow in accepting numerical input, which is a tad surprising since most people these days can surely use a touch-tone keypad.

| A bizarre rumor about Microsoft making sweeping changing to its Product Activation technology in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) is completely untrue, the company told me today. The rumor, which was started by a small technology enthusiast Web site, had Microsoft changing the product keys for all of its customers using volume licensing. This rumors has since spread across the Internet and been embellished in various ways, including a version I came across Thursday morning claiming that Microsoft was making the change so it could charge licensees yet again for SP1. Not so, says Microsoft. "There is no truth in this rumor," Allen Nieman, the Lead Technical Product Manager for Licensing Technologies at Microsoft told me Thursday. "We are not changing the way volume licensing customers install or deploy Windows XP. We are not issuing volume licensing customers new product keys.
