| Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Review Although Ubuntu still has a long road ahead before it will fulfill the aspirations of its creators, version 10.04 includes a number of impressive improvements that artfully advance the platform. The new theme and more cohesive branding contribute to a more compelling visual appearance, tighter integration with the cloud expands the boundaries of the desktop, and usability improvements enrich the user experience. Some key components, like the new theme, require more refinement before they can truly shine. Canonical's Ubuntu One service needs to be shored up and improved to deliver better performance and reliability. The gap left behind by GIMP still needs to be filled better. There are also still many broader challenges that must be overcome before Linux will be ready to conquer the desktop. Areas like hardware support have continued to improve considerably, but still require additional effort. Ubuntu 10.04 is a strong release, one that reflects the distro's growing maturity. http://arstechnica.com/open-source/r...buntu-1004.ars
