| TI Introduces New Power Management ICs to Enhance OLED Color Displays, White LED Back DALLAS (March 30, 2004) - Extending efforts to support every power requirement for next-generation portable color displays, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced today its first organic light emitting diode (OLED) display power conversion integrated circuit (IC) and a new white LED charge pump for backlight applications. See: power.ti.com/sc04044. "The market for OLED displays is expected to top $1 billion by 2006, with rapid growth driven by a shift from monochrome to color," said Kimberly Allen, industry analyst from iSuppli. "These high-value displays offer the potential for manufacturers to produce thinner, lighter and more power efficient digital cameras and other portable electronics, and TI is stepping in at a key moment to support customers ready to go to market with OLED technology." TI's TPS65130 is a dual-output, DC/DC converter optimized to generate a positive output voltage up to 15 V and a negative output voltage down to -12 V with programmable sequencing. With a power conversion efficiency up to 89 percent, the new driver supports advanced OLED and charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor bias supply applications in battery-powered equipment such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and camcorders. The TPS65130 supports an input voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V, which allows it to be powered directly from a single-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery or multi-cell nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and alkaline batteries. Meeting designer's need for board space reduction, the TPS65130 features a small 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package and a minimum number of external components. The TPS65130 operates at a low quiescent current and with a fixed frequency pulse width modulation of minimum 1.25 MHz, which allows the use of tiny 4.7-uH inductors. Independent enable pins allow power-up and power-down sequencing for both outputs. Furthermore, load-disconnect during shutdown conserves battery life. Key Features of the TPS65130 OLED Driver: · Dual Adjustable Output Voltages up to 15 V and down to -12 V · 800-mA Switch Current Limits · Up to 89 Percent Efficiency at Positive Output Voltage Rail · Up to 81 Percent Efficiency at Negative Output Voltage Rail · Power-Save Mode for High Efficiency at Low Load Currents TI also introduced today its TPS60230 white LED charge pump that manages the power supplied to white LED color display backlight applications in cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and camcorders without the need for an inductor . The up to 87 percent-efficient 3 mm x 3 mm device can drive up to five white LEDs with a constant current of 25 mA each, providing a total of 125 mA. The 1-MHz switching frequency allows the use of small capacitors (<1uF). Brightness level of each LED is adjusted through PWM dimming functions on two enable inputs. Key Features of the TPS60230 White LED Charge Pump: · Regulated Output Current with 0.3 Percent Matching Over Temperature · Five Individual LED Channels with 25 mA Each · LED Brightness Control Through PWM Signal on Enable Pins · High Efficiency through Fractional Conversion with 1x and 1.5x Modes · 2.7 V to 6.5 V Operating Input Voltage Range · Internal Soft Start Limits Inrush Current · Low Input Ripple and Low Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) The OLED and CCD power supply converter, and the new white LED charge pump extend TI's comprehensive portfolio of advanced power management ICs for next-generation portable displays. In 2003, TI announced its first inductive white LED driver, the TPS61042, which supplies output voltages up to 28V, and can drive up to eight white LEDs with a constant current. TI also recently announced its TPS61045 adjustable LCD bias boost converter; its popular REG71055 white LED charge pump in ThinSOT-23; and the TPS6511x family of triple output charge pumps for small form factor low-temperature poly silicon (LTPS) liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Pricing and Availability The TPS65130 OLED power converter is available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. Volume production for the TPS60230 is scheduled for the end of the second quarter. The TPS65130 comes in a 24-pin, 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package, while the TPS60230 comes in a 3 mm x 3 mm QFN package. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $2.95 for the TPS65130, and $1.55 for the TPS60230. Evaluation modules, application notes and TI's new VIP power management selection tool are available through power.ti.com. http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.html?i=21874
