Default SiS Southbridge Chipsets In Short Supply?

With VIA Technologies' chipset patent renewal with Intel still not yet settled, Silicon Integrated System (SiS) reportedly is seeing a shortage for its southbridge chipsets, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report. Due to conservative order placing in the first half of the year plus taking up some of VIA's chipset orders, SiS saw a supply gap reaching 30% in July and August, stated the paper. SiS has already placed urgent 0.15- micron process orders at UMC's (United Microelectronics Corporation's) 8-inch fab and expects to solve the supply problem in September, noted the paper, adding that the shortage will only affect less than 3% of the shipments of first-tier desktop PC makers.
