Roku lays off six per cent of workforce

Roku will lay off six per cent of its workforce, or 200 employees, in its second round of job cuts, the US streaming device maker said.

The move is to lower expenses and mirrors several other tech companies which have been offloading staff and properties to save cash.

Roku appears to be particularly enthusiastic when it comes to staff cuts. In November it told 200 US workers to go away.

The press appears to be repeating claims, mostly from big tech, that there is going to be an economic downturn, or in some cases has been such a downturn. Yet few of them have been saying as much on their annual reports, with most reporting they expect things to get better.

Roku, which had about 3,600 full-time employees as of 31 December, expects to incur charges of between $30 million and $35 million related to the restructuring. Most of the restructuring charges will be incurred in the first quarter of fiscal 2023, while the job cuts will be completed by the end of the second quarter, the company said.
