| Qualcomm scales 5G to Snapdragon 8, 7 and 6 series By 2020 Qualcomm’s President Cristiano Amon has announced that beyond already presented Snapdragon 800 series with 5G support, Qualcomm will announce Snapdragon 7 and 6 generations with the 5G support in 2020. Expanding to three tiers in early days of 5G is a massive acceleration of the 5G deployment as currently more than 20 operators and 20 devices are in the market with X50 / Snapdragon 855 combo. Besides, the next-generation Snapdragon 7 series will come with an integrated 5G modem. Integration helps the company to reduce the PCB size and cost of the SoC. Next-generation 8 series Snapdragon that is expected to make an appearance at the Snapdragon Technology Summit in December in Hawaii Maui, and according to Cristiano, it is coming with an X55 generation modem. Keep in mind that Snapdragon X55 is 7nm and supports speeds up to 7Gbps, Stand Alone and Non-Stand-Alone mode and Qualcomm has good RF portfolio. Let’s not forget millimeter Waves as it turns out that currently, Qualcomm is the only company who has support for it in the phone form factor. Bringing 5G all the way to Snapdragon 600 series mid-tier is a positive wave for the market as, Cristiano mentions, there will be 2.2 billion people in countries who plan to launch 5G or have already launched. It is clear that this is a Total Addressable Market (TAM) rather than the exact number, but 5G will scale much faster compared to 4G due to its importance and benefits. Samsung is currently using Qualcomm’s 5G, and the same is expected from Apple in 2020. Samsung will reportedly have its solution ready and has already announced the Exynos 980 which should be ready for mass production by the end of this year, while Huawei has the 5G exclusively in its highest tier. https://fudzilla.com/news/mobile/493...7-and-6-series |
