| Microsoft will refuse to provide updates for old chips Vole starts to play evil with Windows 11 For some reason, known only to itself, Microsoft is planning to get nasty with those who don’t update their PCs. Vole told us last week that Windows 11 block you from installing Windows 11 on a PC with an older CPU, so long as you download and manually install an ISO file all by yourself. OK, that is annoying but still not a reason to not to upgrade. However The Verge has found that technicality has a technicality. Vole is threatening to withhold Windows Updates from your copy of Windows 11 -- potentially even security updates -- if you take that route. For some reason Microsoft has failed to tell anyone about this issue or why it thinks it is vital in the middle of a chip shortage to run its operating system on the latest chip hardware, even if it will work OK with older chips. Microsoft has since told The Verge that unsupported PCs won't be entitled to receive Windows Updates, and that even security and driver updates may be withheld. The move has many of us scratching our heads. Windows 11 is not hugely different from Windows 10 and does not have many compelling reasons to upgrade, if Microsoft makes it too difficult. Having to buy a brand new computer for the thing seems a little pointless. One would think that Microsoft would have learnt its lesson by now and that making it difficult to upgrade will mean that people will not do it. https://fudzilla.com/news/53454-micr...-for-old-chips |
