Default Intel to kill Extreme Edition branding

Update: Intel says Extreme Edition is here to stay

According to a rumor floating around, Intel could soon kill its Extreme Edition branding, leaving the Core i9-7980XE as the last CPU with such branding.

The rumor started with a Tweet from François Piednoël, who, although currently not at Intel, was ex-Principal Engineer, Performance Architect/System Architect at Intel, so the rumor certainly carries a lot of weight.

Intel's Extreme Edition has been the key of Intel's marketing for quite some time, starting with the Pentium 840 EE and the Pentium 955 EE, 965 EE, and the Pentium 969 EE, all the way to the latest Core i9-7980XE.

François was keen to mention that this is a big mistake, and although brandings have become complicated lately, we must agree with François as Extreme Edition, although usually overpriced, was the cream of the crop and the best Intel has to offer in its lineup.

The #ExtremeEdition Brand is about to get killed. What a big mistake.

Intel could also be doing a re-branding and we might see some new name for Extreme Edition but that remains to be seen.

Update from Intel

Shortly after the story got published, Intel got back to us with an official statement saying that there won't be any change to the branding of the Intel Core Extreme Edition processor and Intel Core X-series processor family.

“There is no change to the branding of the Intel Core Extreme Edition processor and Intel Core X-series processor family.”
