| GDDR5 Ready for Mainstream Last year AMD made a splash by being the first & only graphics vendor to offer GDDR5 based products; the ultra-popular 4870 & the flagship 4870X2. Then we reported that manufacturers were ramping up GDDR5 production. Well, after two good quarters of production, we'll finally be seeing the benefits of GDDR5 in the mainstream market. Both AMD and Nvidia are set to launch their next-generation mainstream products in the upcoming quarter. Among the big three memory giants, Samsung has begun mass production of modules rated for 3.2-4GHz (effective speed). They have also started sampling the 5GHz modules to various vendors, probably reserved for the performance/flagship products. Hynix, not to be left behind has begun mass production on modules rated at 3.2-4.5GHz. While Qimonda's fate lies with some potential investor as saviour, they have been busy producing modules rated at 4-5GHz. http://gpucafe.com/2009/02/gddr5-ready-for-mainstream/
