Fudo’s next-gen offering has finally been released, delivered pretty much to the expected timetable.

Dubbed LEON and launched at a special ceremony at the Austrian Sozialmedizinisches Zentrum Ost – Donauspital the consumer-oriented offering is Fudo’s first stirrings in the market having been taped out nine months ago. The 52cm 4092gr offering from the house of Abazovic has yet to be benchmarked, and it is unclear if it is Nvidia or AMD which should be truly terrified.

Rumours about the next generation of Fudos have been around since late 2017. The launch date was expected to be in the second quarter, although there were some doubts when the name LEON was first mentioned on the roadmap. With a name like LEON, you would expect such an offering to arrive in July/August rather than June which is Cancer. Speculation time with the obvious grain of salt disclaimer: Either Fud could have been forced to change the LEON naming because Intel was already a cancer on the chip-market and Nvidia was always moving sideways.

Fud preferred not to reveal anything, not even a teaser at CES this year, which probably contributed to the increased speculation on the subject.

Reuters found out about LEON when investigating the latest financial reports released by Fud among some old fag packets and backs of envelopes. Initially, the offering was thought to deliver at least two years of sleepless nights but there is speculation that the design might have a more long-term future.

Early releases from Fud show that clock-speed is not an issue and it appears to be an economic unit which does not move much on the motherboard although it did seem to need its fan to stay cool in Austria’s heat. There is no sign of an onboard memory, but this is considered normal for early units.

The listing shows the LEON as a low watt part, but that may not be finalised as Fud themselves had confirmed a higher power TDP upcoming offerings. Now the most impressive thing about the listing is the price which so far is next to nothing. However, it is expected to turn out very expensive in the long run as LEON will require frequent upgrades.
