Default Firefox loses ground to Explorer and Safari

OPEN SOURCE browser Firefox has seen its usage figures slip for the first time since it became available.
According to figures provided by Net Applications, Firefox saw its usage slip from 8.71% of users in June to 8.07% in July. However, Internet Explorer went from 86.56% in June to 87.2% and Safari was third with 2.13%, a small growth from the previous month.

Net measurement is always a tricky business and whenever we quote Net Application figures, someone always quotes figures to us that make it look all doom and gloom for El Vole's browser. However, this is the first time Fireferret figures have slumped.

Net Applications' COO Dan Shapero notes that it might be a coincidence that it happened at the same time as Mozilla created a "for profit" division. Or it might not.

He said it will be interesting to see what happens in August. However the hot summer months are never a good time to gauge "usage" of anything, other than ice cold lager, of course.
