iPhones worth more than a bank vault

In a move normally reserved for thieves wanting to break into bank vaults, robbers tunnelled their way into an Apple backstore to steal $500,000 worth of iPhones (that is probably about six).

The store was in Alderwood Mall in Seattle and the thieves entered the building by cutting a hole in neighbouring coffee shop.

Police said that there were 436 iPhones stolen in the raid. Apple is saying nothing but Seattle Coffee Gear manager Eric Marks said the thieves had done their homework.

The coffee shop is not noticeably adjacent to the *Apple Store* because of the way that the store is laid out.

"I would have never suspected we were adjacent to the *Apple Store*, how it wraps around I mean. So, someone really had to think it out and have access to the mall layout," he said.

Police obtained surveillance footage of the theft, but as it is part of an active investigation, it has not yet been released. Nothing was stolen from the coffee shop, but replacing locks and repairing the bathroom wall will cost $1,500.

No employees were at the *Apple Store* when the theft happened, as the Alderwood Mall had closed for the night.
