Default AMD to Prep Athlon 64 2400+, 3100+

Advanced Micro Devices may release additional chips for Socket 754 infrastructure, according to mainboard maker ECS, who already claimed support for AMD Athlon 64 processors rated at speed bins that have not been announced so far.

Elitegroup Computer Systems, one of the world’s largest makers of mainboards, have updated the list of supported chips for its K8T800-A mainboard, a VIA K8T800-based platform, with AMD Athlon 64 models 2400+ and 3100+ with 1MB of L2 cache for Socket 754. ECS is known for its support of unannounced products. Earlier this year it proclaimed support for AMD Athlon 64 3600+ in 939-pin form-factor, however, the chip has not been launched so far.

Earlier this year AMD unveiled AMD Athlon 64 2600+ processor aimed at price-conscious markets, such as India and China. The chip contains 512KB of L2 and probably runs at 1.60GHz clock-speed.

64-bit microprocessors priced at around $150 or less have all chances to become popular among end-users who are looking for innovative and powerful hardware, but cannot easily afford a $300 or $500 CPUs, such as the Athlon 64 3500+. Furthermore, higher installation base of processors is likely to catalyze software developers to talor products for 64-bit chips. System integrators should also be happy with new flavours of AMD64 products, as their customers may be impressed by reasonably priced 64-bit systems.

An AMD representative has not returned enquiry seeking for comments by press time. However, AMD typically does not comment on products before their launch.
