Default AMD indicates yet more Delaydeons

AMD has been reading the papers and is shocked to discover some of its pundits believe that it should not have launched its Radeon HD 7970 before it had some stock in the shops.

Apparently it has taken these comments to heart and has now decided to delay the launch of its supersexy HD 7950 by three weeks, so that suppliers and partners will have a few to sell on launch day.

Could it be that there were no 7970s in the shops because none of the partners had the foggiest? We'd hate to speculate...

The HD7950 uses the latest 28nm process and many gamers want it yesterday. If AMD followed the same pattern that it did for the 7970 there would have been a press release in the mail which contained all the specs. Along with some upset partners and an NDA-breaking journalist with a Text100 sanctioned fatwa on his head.

But now it seems that AMD has decided that the concept of issuing a press release weeks before its suppliers actually had any of the cards is a bad idea.

The Radeon HD 7950 is based on the same Tahiti core used in the higher-end 7970 except that four of the card's GCN compute units have been disabled. This creates a Tahiti Pro core, whereas the GPU on the 7970 is known as the Tahiti XT. The 7950 will feature 1792 Streaming processors and a 3GB GDDR5 frame buffer running on a 384-bit interface. It will have the same video output configuration as the 7970, meaning it can support up to six screens.

The only thing we would not know prior to the launch date is the the TDP, clock speeds and price. AMD might tell us at CES if we give them a Chinese burn. Otherwise it's going to have to be Chinese whispers.

To be fair to AMD, "paper launches" are not normally the chipmaker's style at all. It seems that now it's telling the world and its dog that the launch of the Radeon HD 7980 has been delayed by at least three weeks.

This will ensure the launch aligns with availability of AMD Radeon HD 7950 cards in the channel.
