| Adding VR to Resident Evil 7 "Was Like Working on Two Games at Once" Resident Evil 7 is one of the few AAA game releases that also supports VR. Most VR games are short experiences that many gamers don't perceive as a day one purchase. Kazuhiro Takahara, lead VR engineer on the Resident Evil 7 Biohazard game, brought the entire RE7 experience from start to finish into VR. In an interview with Gamasutra, he explains what it was like to add VR to a game that was already one year into production. Takahara talks about the challenges of VR and why he went with analog controls instead of a traditional VR warping control scheme as it broke immersion. He explains why the development team couldn't rely on still-camera cut scenes and old control conventions. Kazuhiro Takahara says that it was like working on two different games at once, as a dedicated VR team was added to the project to coordinate with the main development team in making sure that all scenes worked well in VR. Fascinating read and highly recommended as Capcom nailed it as a large amount of RE7 players utilize the VR mode in game. Takahara adds that while VR presented a significant number of obstacles, he's looking forward to working with the technology again. "This is definitely something we'd like to utilize in future products. We learned a tremendous amount from working with VR. What was most inspirational for me was the development team taking initiative in tackling a giant challenge. There was zero assurance that we'd succeed, but we were motivated by positive response to Kitchen and recognizing that this was a brand new experience that no one had seen before." http://www.hardocp.com/news/2017/03/...games_at_once/ |
