i'd never advise someone to buy a 6600 256mb when you can have that much more value with a 6600GT 128mb card.

why do you want a 256mb 3Dcard, ford?

there are some 6600GT 256mb cards out there but they are pretty damn hard to get your hands on.

as for the 6800LE & 6800NU, if you got the cash & are willing to take a chance, go for it, if not, go with the more budget minded 6600GT.

I'm just looking for a 150ish USD video card. I'm running a ATI 9200 right now, and it's OK... but definatly nothing to write home about. Any ideas? I don't need dual monitor support, but some room and/or viability of being able to be overclocked would be a plus. The main thing I'm looking for is framerate, so I will listen to either a 128 or 256meg card idea. Silly me thought that you HAD to be running 256meg to really get a decent framerate, but apparently I'm wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks, this is my first post here.

welcome to the forums Stone

with a budget of $150 I would go for either

ATI Radeon 9800 (Pro) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...131-278&depa=1
Or NVIDIA Geforce 6600 (if you can find it in AGP form)

Looks good, and the fact that it's not 256meg isn't a bad thing? Or just no such thing as a "good" $150 card with 256meg? Thanks for your quick response, and my current system all came from Newegg as well, so I'm very familiar with them.

the amount of graphics card memory does not stand for performance as you might think.

The amount of memory will start to play a role in performance when running at high resolutions (1280x1024+) with FSAA/AS enabled, then you will notice a difference between cards with 128 vs 256mb, but that difference is far from earth shocking. At lower resolutions no difference can be seen;

cards from $150 don't have a strong enough GPU to run at those high resolutions & graphical details anyway so extra memory won't increase their performance

you will need the 256 for rendering and video editing.
an 128mb card runs faster then a 256 if i remember.

9800 pro would be a very good decision.

I don't really do any video editing, although I will tinker with jpegs once in a while. This card is mainly so I can get some decent framerates on some of the newer games and benchmarks. I get 12700 with the demo version of Aquamark 03, and around 7400 on 2001SE, but I would like something that would make use of this spanking new CPU I just got. Thanks again for the response guys. I think I will like it here.

uhm; come again? video editing relies more on raw CPU power and SYSTEM memory bandwidth, not a lot to do with videocard memory;

128mb is as fast/slow as 256mb, there were cards on the market with higher clocked memory. Geforce 4 Ti4200 in particular, the 64Mb version had higher clocks then 128Mb version, making it faster in most games.

the R9800 is good, but the 6600 if you can find in AGP, is the obvious choice, bettter performance at the same price
