dvds make my pc crash

i try to play a dvd on my pc.
but when i insert the dvd in my dvd-rom.
and a player is opened the player crashes.
the order of starting the program and inserting the dvd doesn't matter.

my specs:
xp1700+@1650
256mb pc400 ddr ram
gigabyte 7g-vaxp
2*wd800JB in raid0
winxp pro sp1

anyone know of something that can cause this problem?
should i try at stock speeds?
how do i solve this?

i tried cyberlink powerdvd 4 deluxe
and easy dvd player.
both give problems.
but the problem changed my drive doesn't recognise the dvd as a dvd.
it says i have to insert a dvd media.

damn i wanna watch those borrowed dvd's

videocard drivers update -shutdown
attach DVD to single IDE channel as master -boot
deinstall all DVD soft -reboot
install PowerDVD -reboot

try again.

dvd-rom is on ide1 or 2 not sure as master
so i can skip that step i guess
