tried it, didn't work

I have 3 options when using fixboot :
1 windows (new install)
2 windows (old install)
3 WinNT

tried 1 and 2, no go.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect" is correct though

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Happened to me twice last year with WinY2K and Win-XP, the MB master boot was corrupted. I had to reload. The second time it happened on another machine I finally dropped WinY2k. My only reason to keep two was the damn scanner did not have XP-driver support. Went out and bought a new scanner for $60; end the freaking headache.

"bootcfg /rebuild" ?

Or is this the same as "fixboot"?

You're gonna buy a new scanner?

I get that message sometimes when I'm overclocking.

lowering the overclock usually fixes the problem...

I never used that console though. I usually do a repair when something is terribly wrong. I think you can do a repair if you boot from the win xp cd and press F5 right away but I haven't tried that yet.

Also, I once replaced the boot.ini. Took it from one winxp and copied it to the other winxp. I don't know what I did for it to let me do that though because I tried the same thing again later on and that time, it didn't let me copy the file (in use by the os, even in safe mode it didn't work).
