Default Intel Core i7 920 and 965 XE CPU Review

In a few weeks you can find a brand new Intel CPU at your local hardware shop, it still carries the Core name but it is drastically different compared to their previous Core 2 units. The Core i7 has an onboard memory controller and hyperthreading is re-introduced. We compare the performance of the entry level 920 model as well as the high end 965 XE.

Nice job with the power consumption results! Those are suspiciously like my own Q6600 results... but much more magnified. Core i7 looks to be a power sink...

Would've liked to see QX9770 results in a few more places (especially those game tests) but otherwise is a nice review. Very much liked how you tested the 9950BE @ 3.2Ghz.

Thanks Kougar. If possible we'll test the QX9770 some more, this was on my end, but I could not get hold of a 4870 X2 fast enough to complete the testing.

I kind of figured the sporadic QX9770 results was due to time constraints, so no worries.

I looked at Techgage's review, they had QX9770 and all three Core i7 results on some real world game settings; despite 1680x1050 resolution 4xAA/8xAF max detail Core i7 definitely took a 5-15 FPS hit for some newer games. Even at the 30" resolution COD4 had a 3-5FPS hit compared to the QX9770...

As much as I need a true SLI / Xfire capable board I am seriously considering waiting now... if I could keep my six sticks of 1GB DDR2-800 I'd have upgraded.
