Videocards/VGA Reviews by geoffrey @ 2006-12-03

At the beginning of September NVIDIA released their reincarnation of the G71 based GeForce 7900 GT. As midrange card the 7900GT seem to be the best buy for a big group of gamers in the first half of 2006. This time around they’ve given the mid-range card a speed boost to high end! With world leading VGA partners offering their version right away let´s see which can give us the best 7950 GT.

Our gaming tests favor the higher clocked eVGA card, and for ~€20-30 it’s not a bad deal if you’re after a guaranteed overclock. Overall we saw a 3~7 FPS increase in various games. The downside of the eVGA however is its rather noisy cooling solution which can be quite disturbing once you load up a game.

eVGA customers enjoy a 10 year limited warranty, a chance to win cool prizes as well as upgrade their video card at reduced price when a new one comes out thanks to an interesting “step-up” program.

The Sparkle and Asus were very evenly matched, with identical prices, game performance and cooling solution, however it was the extra package contents (free gameof Ghost Recon) and slightly better OC out of the box (which can be variable between samples though) which made us give the nod to the Asus.

And the end of the day, if you’re looking for the fastest no fuss 7950 GT product out there the eVGA will fit the bill perfectly, if you’re more keen to save a few dollars/euros, you might be better of with a reference clocked model, both Sparkle and Asus only trailed the eVGA by a few percentile and when overclocked were able to catch/surpass it even. Product availability and price will be the deciding factor for most, and you can’t go wrong with either one, if you want a free game, the Asus will be your preferred pick.

We like to thank Sparkle/DollarShop, Asus and eVGA for allowing us to test drive and torture their 7950 GT products, we hope our readers found something useful in this roundup, until next time!
