NVIDIA 7950 GT Roundup - Speedbump to High End

Videocards/VGA Reviews by geoffrey @ 2006-12-03

At the beginning of September NVIDIA released their reincarnation of the G71 based GeForce 7900 GT. As midrange card the 7900GT seem to be the best buy for a big group of gamers in the first half of 2006. This time around they’ve given the mid-range card a speed boost to high end! With world leading VGA partners offering their version right away let´s see which can give us the best 7950 GT.

Futuremark 3D Mark & Overclocking

Futuremark 3D Mark

These synthetic systems tests from Futuremark give you a good overall idea of performance between the video cards: you should not solely rely on these results though as the game benchmarks do not always reflect these rankings.

Overclocking

  • ASUS 7950GT
    Core clock: 650MHz (550MHz stock) +~18%
    Memory clock: 820MHz (700MHz stock) +~17%

  • EVGA 7950GT
    Core clock: 645MHz (600MHz stock) +~7%
    Memory clock: 850MHz (725MHz stock) +~17%

  • Sparkle 7950GT
    Core clock: 615MHz (550MHz stock) +~12%
    Memory clock: 840MHz (700MHz stock) +~20%

The increased GPU and Memory clocks have a noticeable impact in these Futuremark Benchmarks:

The Sparkle gains ~12%, the eVGA ~8% and the Asus card ~15%! Now how does this translate to real game performance? In the flash chart shown below Serious Sam 2 was re-tested with the higher clock speeds. By hitting the “clean page (x)” button you can fill the chart with the results you like to see, try it out:

Looking at the average FPS these were the results
  • Sparkle: +~13%
  • eVGA: +~9%
  • Asus: +~20%

The Asus takes the cake in the overclocking section of our review, although it’s known that sample variance can be quite big, since we only got one card for review from each manufacturer we can’t really tell you if you particular card will reach high/low overclocks.

With the eVGA you get the guarantee that the card will overclock above nVIDIA reference speeds without worrying about overheating or losing warranty; With the other brands it’s a hit and miss.

Looking at other people’s overclocking results with 7950 GT cards we can see that the products tested here today overclock not bad at all.
