Far CryFar Cry has been around for quite a while now, but its graphics engine still doesn?t fail to impress. For this benchmark run we put on all eye-candy, except for HDR, which doesn?t play very nicely together when AA is enabled. There?s a patch out which allows you enable both at the same time (
see here). But as you will see below, AA alone is already enough to tax a mid-range VGA card quite a bit. HDR does take larger toll on performance, so keep this mind if you plan to enable HDR with these cards.
In Far Cry you play as Jack Carver. His mission is to safe Val (his girlfriend) who is being held captive on a beautiful tropical island. While going through the jungle he?ll discover quite a bit of oddities.
The scene we used to benchmark is from the beginning of his adventure. You just went true some basic training and you found a tool to communicate with a certain ?Doyle?. As you proceed you will find yourself walking in the jungle for the first time.
On the graph you can see that indoor scenes are really a lot easier to render then outdoor scenes. Once you go outside both cards fall back to just above 30fps and this at only 1024x768 2xAA/4xAF
At higher detail we get an average of 12fps between the X1800GTO and the 7600GT,
Increasing IQ to 4xAA/8xAF takes a smaller toll on frame rate then expected, gameplay remains fluent.
At 1280x1024 you?ll most likely be able to strike a balance between image quality settings and frame rate, with everything set to high and 4xAA/8xAF enabled the lowest frame rate recorded is ~30FPS
