ActiveCool AC4G review

Cooling/Water Cooling by DUR0N @ 2002-12-14

Howdy people, this is my first review for [M]adshrimps, and it?s going to be a damn fine one I?m telling you!
Nowadays most people want a silent heatsink/fan and good temperatures. You can have it quiet, but you will lose the nice temps. You can mix em up, and have a nice combo or you can just turn mad and buy the loudest and fastest fans around. Today no loud crap, we?ll do it the silent and performing way. Is it possible? Well, you?ll find out in a minute. I?m going to guide you trough the ActiveCool AC4G CPU cooler. Expect heatsinks, peltier elements, getto setups and a totaly crazy reviewer.

What is it all about?

This mighty cooler is originaly from Israel and most people heard about for the first time when Comdex 2002 was around. Everyone who knew something about peltiers said that is was impossible to cool two peltiers with an aluminium heatsink without killing your CPU almost instantly. Are they wrong? Read the review and be amazed!

The ColorCase Company recieved one of the prototypes from ActiveCool and were kind enough to lend it me for a wile. In a telephone converstion with ActiveCool they found out that the cooler wasn´t going to show up on the market before February. So I guess I´ve got an early beta of the cooler. Yippie!

For the people who still don´t know what an AC4G is, I´ll put you out of your misery right away. The AC4G is an advanced cooling solution which is for the moment only availyble for the P4. The cooler consists of two parts: a normal CPU cooler with two peltier elements and a coldplate under it and also the PCI card with the controller. The PCI card reads the temps of the peltiers and the CPU fan speed. Then it adapts the peltier voltage and the fan speed to the desired settings. The PCI card is also necessary because the peltiers require an enormous amount of power, which is too high for a normal PSU. So there is an auxiliary power input on the PCI card.
