Toshiba Canvio Flex 4TB USB 3.2 Gen 1 External HDD Review

Storage/HDD by stefan @ 2024-10-05

The Canvio Flex 4TB drive from Toshiba does perform as expected for a 4TB 2.5’’ drive, MQ04UBB400 relying less on caching versus the drives found with Silicon Power external drives, which usually use Western Digital internals. Unlike models from WD, the internal board of the drive does offer a Micro-B 3.0 connector directly and not SATA, so no daughterboards are required here and the overall length of the total assembly is shorter.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Toshiba has recently sent our way another version of the Canvio Flex series of external HDDs, this time the 4TB capacity SKU. The larger capacity model does come with a different chassis to be able to accommodate the drive inside, but includes the same goodies as before.

The Canvio Flex 4TB external drive is shipped inside a compact cardboard enclosure, which shows a photo of the product on the frontal area, but also some main highlights:

The side area does inform the user on the product categories Toshiba does offer, along with the compatibility with different platforms. We will also receive cables of two different standards:

In the opposite area, we will note the OS compatibility options, along with some more info by accessing a QR code:

Similar info is available in the back as well:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will find some documentation, but also a secondary, plain protective layer:

The included leaflet is multi-language and does come with the installation instructions for multiple SKUs:

As mentioned before along with the Canvio Flex we will receve not one but two separate cables:

The supplied cable with USB-A does feature a Micro-B 3.0 connector on the drive side and not the more familiar USB-C for some reason:
