Acer MA200 1TB Gen4 2230 NVMe SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2024-08-11

The MA200 1TB SSD from BIWIN does perform good for a drive of its size in terms of performance and thanks to the inclusion of TLC instead of QLC, we will note over 700MB/s writes even after the pSLC has been filled. Also, we have a TBW rating of 600 and a 5-year warranty, more than other manufacturers do offer for drives of this type.

Conclusive Thoughts

The MA200 1TB SSD from BIWIN does perform good for a drive of its size in terms of performance and thanks to the inclusion of TLC instead of QLC, we will note over 700MB/s writes even after the pSLC has been filled. Also, we have a TBW rating of 600 and a 5-year warranty, more than other manufacturers do offer for drives of this type.

The HD Tune Writes workload does show how the transition is made when the pSLC cache gets filled and we start writing directly to the TLC; the drive will quickly recover from a sub 500MB/s rate to around 700MB/s. The sharp drop won’t be observed via most regular data transfer clients though:

The only small downside is that the drive runs a bit hot if transferring a lot of data at once; in our tests, we have reached about 75 degrees Celsius for the controller and 72 degrees Celsius on the NAND, this on a BIOSTAR X670E board with its own heatsink attached to the drive, so we suspect the drive will get a bit hotter when used in a mobile console.

The Acer MA200 1TB drive can be currently found online for about 123 Euros, a bit pricier than the Patriot Viper VP4000 Mini 1TB, which packs similar performance overall.
