BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700 Motherboard Review

Motherboards/Intel LGA1700 by stefan @ 2022-12-25

While the Z790 VALKYRIE motherboard from BIOSTAR gets sometimes lower scores in benchmarks versus the EVGA Z690 CLASSIFIED which has a more mature UEFI, it compensates by having better expansion options (3 full-sized PCIe slots, no less than five M.2 for storage, individually detachable heatsinks, but also quite a bit of headers). It incorporates a 20-phase design, shielded slots, a lot of headers for fans and USB ports but also a debug LED display for signaling errors.

A Closer Look Part III

This board is equipped with two BIOSes and a switch to navigate between it; a LED will signal the currently active BIOS and nearby we will also find a Speaker header but also a JSPI header:

An USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C port is available via the internal header, which is joined by the USB 3.2 Gen2 header for two additional ports:

Moving on, we do have the 24-pin ATX power header:

In the top right corner, we will find the fourth system fan PWM header, along with the Power/Reset physical buttons:

Nearby, we do have the two 5V and one 12V RGB headers:

The CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT headers are located between the top VRM area and the memory slots:

The memory slots are reinforced, for more durability:

Near the LGA1700 socket, we will note that BIOSTAR has wrote instructions on how to connect the memory modules, but we will also get to see a serial number sticker:

The Z790 VALKYRIE is equipped with one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot which can function in both x16 and x8 modes, the middle slot is PCIe 5.0 and will run at x8, while the bottom slot is PCIe 4.0 and will run in x4 mode:

After removing all integrated heatsinks, we will expose the M.2 expansion slots:

The top M.2 slot is linked to the CPU, can take 2280 drives and does support PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe SSDs:

On the same line, we will find a M.2 (E Key) slot which supports 2230 formats of WiFi and Bluetooth modules, but also Intel GEN2 CNVi:
