Synology has updated their low-end 4-bay model with the release of the DS414j which retains the old version chassis and at its core we will find the 1.2GHz MindSpeed Comcerto dual-core ARM processor, which is paired with 512MB of RAM. As the more expensive models, DSM 5.0 is installed on the unit which adds great value and ease of use.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In this article we will take a look at a mainstream NAS solution from Synology, which is oriented towards people on a tighter budget, while offering good overall performances. The final lower price was attained by using the MindSpeed Comcerto 2000 ARM dual-core processor at 1.2GHz, which is paired with 512MB of DDR3. The mainboard is enclosed inside an older design chassis which can accommodate up to 4 drives. The product is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard box:

On one of the box sides we will find a sticker which shows a summary of hardware details, but also the package contents:

The opposite area lists some of the functions the server can perform:

The product along with its bundle is located in separate enclosures:

Besides the power lead, we will receive the power adapter, one RJ45 cable, three sets of screws and a Quick Installation Guide:

The power supply is manufactured by PGB and is rated on the output 12V with 7.5A:

As described before, we are dealing with a mixed metal-plastic chassis, which is noticeably heavier than the one we have found with the DS414 and the front is covered by a transparent plastic film, for avoiding scratches during transit:

The front does not open up like on the newer designs, but acts as a large intake ventilation grill for the internal drives but also for the motherboard; here we will also find the STATUS and LAN LEDs on the left side of the Power ON/OFF button, while on the right we will see the HDD activity LEDs :
