iOCEAN X8 octa-core Smartphone Review

Mobile/Smart Phones by stefan @ 2014-06-13

With the 5.7’’ X8 model, iOCEAN has chosen to go with a much more professional look by using a combination of metallic alloy and Gorilla Glass III for the front and thicker Asahi Glass for the back. We are still dealing with a dual-sim model thanks to the specially designed tray (which can fit both micro-SIM and nano-SIM), 32GB of internal memory but no microSDHC card slot has been fitted this time.

The Software GUI Part I

After the initial boot, we will be welcomed with an interface in Chinese and in order to bypass it we will have to get inside the Settings menu carefully; hopefully the X8 will default to English at future ROM releases since for people which are not familiar with Android it would be a little difficult to reach the respective setting. We can also mention that the phone resets itself to Chinese GUI too after doing a factory reset. The software interface is similar to what we have seen with the X7S, but we will go over it again anyways; some icons are brought to the desktop by default, along with the analog clock widget:

Along the default applications we have seen on all MTK ROMs, we will also get to see Chinese-specific content like the AppMarket or Baidu Map:

iOCEAN has chosen to keep the Backup & Restore application, even if it is unusable on the X8 because of the lack of a microSDHC slot; we have also tried to plug in an USB Flash Drive via OTG but it seems that this application does not access it:

The included MTK camera application has quite a few options that we can set and also includes object tracking capabilities:

From the Desktop wallpapers application, we will be able to choose some of the default wallpapers for the desktop and lock screen, but also from the available live wallpapers:

From the included File Manager, we will be able to see the total free space remaining and in this case we also have the External USB Storage listed, when we have plugged in our OTG USB Flash Drive:

The stock Gallery application will get to show us the camera photos, taken screenshots and many more:

The included Maps application is pretty self-explanatory:
