QNAP HS-210 Silent and Fanless 2-bay NAS Review

Storage/NAS by stefan @ 2014-02-13

HS-210 is the new fanless 2-bay NAS from QNAP which supports both 2.5’’ and 3.5’’ drives; the top cover acts as a large heatsink and is powered by a 1.6GHz Marvell processor along with 512MB of RAM. Thanks to the QTS 4.1 operating system, the NAS is fully featured but unfortunately it does not have a HDMI port for connecting directly to our HDTV.

The Software Interface Part I

In order to start setting up the NAS, we will download and install the QNAP Qfinder utility which will list the current configuration:

The software will offer us a Quick Setup method, which is quite automated or Manual Setup:

Then we will be prompted to confirm the current disk configuration:

The next step would be to specify the NAS name inside the network, a password for the administrator account, an email address but also a desired disk configuration:

We will be able to leave the NAS obtain a network IP automatically or specify a manual configuration:

The firmware can be chosen to be uploaded automatically from the QNAP servers or we can specify a file we have already stored on our HDD:

Afterwards the software will require us to confirm the desired configuration settings:

During the setup procedure, which will take a while, we will be able to see the configuration steps and watch the progress bar:

When the configuration has been completed and the NAS has automatically rebooted, we will be informed of the operation success:

In QTS 4.1 the login screen has changed slightly, but the older version is also available/selectable from the software interface:
