DS413 is one of the newest NASes from Synology aimed at the Home to Business Workgroup segment, and features the same chassis as we have seen before at the DS412+, marketed for the Small and Medium Business segment.

Then NAS is equipped with a dual core processor at 1.067GHz and 1GB of DDR3 RAM; as we have seen before, the trays have support for both 2.5'' and 3.5'' drives and for each type we have a different set of screws available.

Despite the lower clocked CPU and a single LAN port, the DS413 succeeds to provide good read/write speeds when transferring files from the server or to the server; the connectivity has been kept from the DS412+ (except the dual LAN) so we have two USB 3.0 ports in the back, one USB 2.0 in the front and also an eSATA port. The dual fans are silent in operation and we are able to customize their speeds from inside the OS.

Depending on the number of disks we have installed, the unit supports the following types of RAID: Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, Raid 5+ Spare, RAID 6 or RAID 10.

Speaking of the OS, the NAS runs the latest version of the DSM, which is really easy to use and comes with a GUI similar of a regular operating system. From it we can also install new modules, coming from Synology or 3rd party. From the applications that are supplied by Synology, we can enumerate File Station, Mail Server, FTP Server, Web Station or Print Server.

Add-ons are also available, like Audio Station, Photo Station, iTunes Server, DHCP server, Antivirus, Time Backup and many more.

Synology also has available free applications for mobile devices running iOS, Android or Windows Phone OS like DS photo+, DS audio, DS cam, DS file or DS finder.

The NAS comes with a recommended price before VAT of 375 Euros, which is a little steep for home environments, but should be no issue for small and medium-sized companies.
