Considering that the HDD prices have raised a lot in the last time period and the SSDs are not as expensive as they used to be before, it is a good time to invest in one, depending on the available budget. Most people will choose lower capacities SSDs, like 64 and 128GB, to use them as boot drives in their desktops.
The Patriot Pyro SSD tested today features the SandForce SF-2281 controller, paired with 128GB of 25nm NAND memory; however, the SSD needs to allocate 8GB for its RAISE feature so the total remaining space would be 120GB. After the drive has completed formatting, we will have a total of 111GB available for our data.
The drive goes head-to-head with the ADATA S511 60GB with the same controller, but it does get beaten in some situations, mostly because of the used NAND. When using data that can be compressed, we will get, however, the results that Patriot Memory mentioned in the specifications like 538MB/s for reads and 503MB/s for writes.
We could only consider one negative point regarding this product and that is the lack of a 3.5'' adapter, which allows mounting on desktops; however, some new cases already come with SSD mounting capabilities in which "case" the problem is solved.
The 120GB drive can be found in stores for about 133 Euros, a competitive price considering the 3-year warranty and the performances offered.
